 OT Les Mis

:) For the first time next month I will be going to see this show. Having been in the concert version, I never really followed the whole story, as I just had to sing when the MD Stephen Brooker said so.

Without giving anything away, is it a rollercoaster of emotions? I would love to know. Please reply if you have any thoughts.

I went to see it for the first time on Friday. I was impressed. I had only the OLC recording and the “Hey Mr Producer” tape to refer to.

I went into the theatre with a blank canvas in my head. I didn’t want to sit and compare voices and what not. I wanted to see this cast on their on merits.

Michael McCarthy was just superb as Javert, I really felt for his character (as he never seemed to stay ahead of Jean Valjean).

Jeff Leyton was not on and his cover was on instead. The cover Ian I think his name was played J V J well only at times I couldn’t make out what he was saying/singing.

Oliver Thornton who played Enjolras had me nearly standing in the theatre saying I’ll go along and fight with you. And it helped that he was a really nice guy when I spoke to him after the show.

Joanna Ampil, I had known her singing in a few concerts as Eponine. So when she came on as Fantine I was taken back as I only had songs to refer to who the character was. So when you saw her playing the character in context, I really understood the songs on the CD

Jon Lee (former S Club7) was a really pleasant surprise. His voice was strong but pleasant; his acting was very convincing and was very agile for getting around the stage. You could say I fell for Marius at the barricades!!!!!!

The Thenardiers Katie Secombe & Stephen Tate were just hilarious. Even my mother said in certain parts “where did they come from?” Because they always seemed to be in the thick of it.

Lydia Griffiths' (Cosette)voice was pleasant to listen to. It was just right and not the high voice on the C.D. Which I was very happy about.

Sophia Ragavelas (Eponine) again very agile and a delightful voice. But I wasn’t conviced that her character was in love with Marius. It looked from the interaction on stage, more of a crush than unrequited love. Also I think it was because I had a vision in my head how it would have been played. And then see the complete oppsisite of that.

All in all I enjoyed the whole show. Oliver & Jon had me wanting to be at the barricades. While Michael McCarthy I just couldn’t fault!

There were other characters in the show that deserve a mention but I’d be here all day doing so. Gavroche surprised me. Great character, great actor had me going awwww at one point! Shame Cosette & 'Ponine never became friends before the end.

One question though, did Marius not know Eponine was the Thenardiers daughter?

Go and see it !! Fantastic show! And I never cried!

PS Have started reading the abridged version of the book and a lot more is making sence.

Hi Star - how's things. Not "chatted" to you for ages - you once did a MB photo for me and sorted out my web site :)

I went two weeks ago to see Les Mis with husband, son and his girlfriend. Our son Ian was not keen to go but really enjoyed it and his girlfriend Pippa had her hanky out at the end. We all thought the show absolute fantastic. I couldn't get over how quickly it went as it is a long show. Would have loved to have seen it years ago though when Michael was in it. Jon was vry good as Marius but he sang "Empty Chairs" I quietly whispered to my husband "not a patch on Michael" and Bill said he knew I was going to say that.

What a wonderful night.

I have been sitting reading the book, and I have got a lot of unanswered questions answered. But if you haven't seen the show or read the book, I won't give anything away. If you have maybe some of you will have noticed some differences. :D
Take Care
