INFORMATION PACK
“I should introduce myself. My name’s Scarlet, and I’m a busker. And now I feel like I’ve just confessed to something. My name is Douglas and I’ve got haemorrhoids. My name is Bethany and I drown puppies. Okay everyone, group hug!” PLAYING FOR REWARD is presented by Andy Jordan Productions Ltd in association with Rags & Feathers Theatre Company. It will premiere at this year’s Edinburgh Festival, playing at The Gilded Balloon Teviot (Dining Room) at 2.15pm from 1-25 August.
THE PLAY
A new play with original, live music. Starring Emma Williams and Paul Tonkinson, with music composed and performed live by musician and real-life Underground busker, Joe Evans.
The play is a funny, dark and often poignant look at life through the eyes of a London busker. Two actors and a musician create the fast and frenetic world of the Underground: the people who journey through it and its own, very distinctive sound.
A topical note: Busking up until very recently was illegal, although there is now a trial ‘licensing’ period taking place on the London Underground. But ‘busking’ was never mentioned in any statute or rule book. In fact, the offence is termed: ‘Playing for Reward’.
So who are buskers? Failed guitarists? Hopeful flautists? Musicians who didn’t quite make it, surely. Side-stepping the law to fill our lives with music. And what reward are they playing for? Money? The chance of fame and glory? Or something else? This play looks at what makes a talented musician stand in a damp tunnel for hours on end playing to a passing crowd who may barely acknowledge their existence.
Telling its story through a structure of monologues and duologues, the play is based on the actual experiences of buskers, and will be accompanied live by busker/singer/songwriter Joe Evans, performing original music and songs.
SYNOPSIS
Scarlet, a busker, talks about her life in the Underground. As we experience her day to day distractions - London Underground Staff, Transport Police, other buskers claiming her pitch, fans, drunks, tourists and terrorists - we also discover why someone would choose an existence of scraping by for thrown coins and avoiding arrest rather than live a ‘normal’ life.
When a passing commuter offers her the chance to go on Busker Idol, a new TV show, fame and fortune beckon. Scarlet has been playing for reward all her life, and suddenly the rewards are right there within reach. But were they the rewards she was really playing for?
As Scarlet’s story unfolds, we learn what lies behind her itinerant lifestyle. The dark tunnels of the tube have become a hiding place for a disturbing secret. Can she get back to the light she used to love, and would it mean the end of her days as a busker if she does?

An edgy and authentic look at lives out of the ordinary in today’s ambivalent world. Fast, funny and moving with dazzling original music, the play examines our search for fulfilment within a society which seems only to value conformity and personal gain.
THE PRODUCTION The play is set in the London Underground. The design will reflect the daily experiences of everyone who’s ever been on the tube, using familiar points of reference and paying particular attention to the soundscape and the rhythms of the underground. The production style will be uncluttered, simple and effective, concentrating attention on Scarlet’s story and the way that her ‘real’ life under ground is punctuated by the characters who inhabit the rest of her world.
APPEAL OF THE SHOW A well written, witty comedy with a dark, poignant edge Fantastic music score. All music composed and played live by one of London’s top buskers We plan to feature guest busker in the show, playing a contestant in the Busker Idol competition. A different celebrity each day (likeThe Play What I Wrote) will guarantee audience and press interest New and different subject gives fascinating insight into the extraordinary world of busking. The busking network is highly organised and a great deal of meticulous planning goes into each day’s schedule. A small group of buskers ‘manages’ the pitches and timetables are drawn up using a complex system of text messages and handwritten notes, carefully concealed behind maps on the wall. Outsiders are not welcome, and ‘seasonal’ buskers hoping to cash in on holiday crowds are quickly repelled.

To add a video.. Ill give you some help. You either need to post a Link to the file. Right click on video and press propeties Copy the URL in the proeties. Then Press the [url][/url] Button (A picture of a world and a little pice of paper) Or you could try inserting a [img][/img] Using the same porcedures. And put it into the IMG tags. It could work but I will suggest that the {URL} It the best possibilltie.
